Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The location, located using intelligence, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was situated in mountainous terrain just north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of access tunnels leading to the facility... initial indications indicate the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established jihadist rule over significant areas in Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores the UK's leading role, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to eliminate any re-emergence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

British military aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State subsequent to its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank all the members of our armed forces who took part in this operation for their skill and their courage," he added. "They were part of thousands of British personnel on duty over the holidays. This operation, to take out dangerous terrorists who endanger our safety, demonstrates how British military are ready to step up, continuously, ensuring Britain's security at home and strong abroad."

During December, the United States armed forces conducted what it called a "massive strike" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations says Islamic State still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in both countries.
