‘It appears magical’: does light therapy actually deliver clearer skin, healthier teeth, and more resilient joints?
Light-based treatment is definitely experiencing a moment. Consumers can purchase glowing gadgets targeting issues like complexion problems and aging signs to aching tissues and oral inflammation, the newest innovation is a dental hygiene device outfitted with tiny red LEDs, promoted by the creators as “a major advance for domestic dental hygiene.” Globally, the sector valued at $1bn last year is expected to increase to $1.8bn within the next decade. There are even infrared saunas available, which use infrared light to warm the body directly, your body is warmed directly by infrared light. According to its devotees, the experience resembles using an LED facial mask, stimulating skin elasticity, soothing sore muscles, alleviating inflammatory responses and persistent medical issues while protecting against dementia.
Research and Reservations
“It appears somewhat mystical,” says a Durham University professor, professor in neuroscience at Durham University and a convert to the value of light therapy. Naturally, certain impacts of light on human physiology are proven. Our bodies produce vitamin D through sun exposure, needed for bone health, immunity, muscles and more. Light exposure controls our sleep-wake cycles, additionally, activating brain chemicals and hormonal responses in daylight, and winding down bodily functions for sleep as it fades into night. Sunlight-imitating lamps are a common remedy for people with seasonal affective disorder (Sad) to combat seasonal emotional slumps. Clearly, light energy is essential for optimal functioning.
Different Light Modalities
While Sad lamps tend to use a mixture of light frequencies from the blue end of the spectrum, most other light therapy devices deploy red or infrared light. In rigorous scientific studies, such as Chazot’s investigations into the effects of infrared on brain cells, finding the right frequency is key. Light constitutes electromagnetic energy, which runs the spectrum from the lowest-energy, longest wavelengths (radio waves) to high-energy gamma radiation. Light-based treatment employs mid-spectrum wavelengths, including invisible ultraviolet radiation, then visible light (all the colours we see in a rainbow) and infrared light visible through night vision technology.
UV light has been used by medical dermatologists for many years to treat chronic skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and vitiligo. It modulates intracellular immune mechanisms, “and reduces inflammatory processes,” says a dermatology expert. “Substantial research supports light therapy.” UVA penetrates skin more deeply than UVB, while the LEDs in consumer devices (usually producing colored light emissions) “tend to be a bit more superficial.”
Safety Considerations and Medical Oversight
The side-effects of UVB exposure, including sunburn or skin darkening, are understood but clinical devices employ restricted wavelength ranges – meaning smaller wavelengths – which minimises the risks. “Treatment is monitored by medical staff, meaning intensity is regulated,” notes the specialist. Most importantly, the lightbulbs are calibrated by medical technicians, “to guarantee appropriate wavelength emission – different from beauty salons, where oversight might be limited, and emission spectra aren’t confirmed.”
Consumer Devices and Evidence Gaps
Red and blue light sources, he explains, “don’t have strong medical applications, but they may help with certain conditions.” Red light devices, some suggest, enhance blood flow, oxygen utilization and dermal rejuvenation, and activate collagen formation – a key aspiration in anti-ageing effects. “Research exists,” comments the expert. “However, it’s limited.” Nevertheless, with numerous products on the market, “we don’t know whether or not the lights emitted are reflective of the research that has been done. We don’t know the duration, how close the lights should be to the skin, the risk-benefit ratio. Numerous concerns persist.”
Targeted Uses and Expert Opinions
One of the earliest blue-light products targeted Cutibacterium acnes, bacteria linked to pimples. Scientific backing remains inadequate for regular prescription – although, notes the dermatologist, “it’s frequently employed in beauty centers.” Some of his patients use it as part of their routine, he observes, however for consumer products, “we just tell them to try it carefully and to make sure it has been assessed for safety. Without proper medical classification, standards are somewhat unclear.”
Innovative Investigations and Molecular Effects
Simultaneously, in advanced research areas, scientists have been studying cerebral tissue, identifying a number of ways in which infrared can boost cellular health. “Nearly every test with precise light frequencies demonstrated advantageous outcomes,” he reports. It is partly these many and varied positive effects on cellular health that have driven skepticism about light therapy – that results appear unrealistic. Yet, experimental evidence has transformed his viewpoint.
The scientist mainly develops medications for neurological conditions, but over 20 years ago, a doctor developing photonic antiviral treatment consulted his scientific background. “He developed equipment for cellular and insect experiments,” he recalls. “I was pretty sceptical. The specific wavelength measured approximately 1070nm, that nobody believed did anything biological.”
Its beneficial characteristic, though, was that it travelled through water easily, meaning it could penetrate the body more deeply.
Mitochondrial Effects and Brain Health
Growing data suggested infrared influenced energy-producing organelles. Mitochondria produce ATP for cell function, producing fuel for biological processes. “Mitochondria exist throughout the body, particularly in neural cells,” says Chazot, who concentrated on cerebral applications. “It has been shown that in humans this light therapy increases blood flow into the brain, which is always very good.”
With specific frequency application, cellular power plants create limited oxidative molecules. In limited quantities these molecules, explains the expert, “stimulates so-called chaperone proteins which look after your mitochondria, look after your cells and also deal with the unwanted proteins.”
These processes show potential for neurological conditions: oxidative protection, swelling control, and cellular cleanup – self-digestion mechanisms eliminating harmful elements.
