The State of Texas Attorney General Sues Acetaminophen Manufacturers Concerning Autism Assertions

Judicial Case
Ken Paxton, who supports former President Trump who is running for the United States Senate, alleged the drug companies of hiding the risks of acetaminophen

The top legal official in Texas Ken Paxton is taking legal action against the manufacturers of Tylenol, asserting the firms hid alleged dangers that the pain reliever created to children's neurological development.

The court filing comes a month after Donald Trump publicized an unverified association between using acetaminophen - also known as paracetamol - during pregnancy and autism in young ones.

The attorney general is taking legal action against the pharmaceutical giant, which formerly manufactured the drug, the only pain reliever approved for expectant mothers, and the current manufacturer, which currently produces it.

In a statement, he said they "deceived the public by making money from pain and promoting medication regardless of the dangers."

The company says there is lacking scientific proof linking acetaminophen to autism.

"These manufacturers misled for generations, deliberately risking millions to line their pockets," the attorney general, from the Republican party, stated.

Kenvue commented that it was "seriously troubled by the dissemination of inaccurate information on the security of acetaminophen and the likely effects that could have on the health of American women and children."

On its website, the company also said it had "regularly reviewed the applicable studies and there is insufficient valid information that demonstrates a established connection between using acetaminophen and autism spectrum disorder."

Organizations acting on behalf of medical professionals and healthcare providers agree.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has said paracetamol - the key substance in acetaminophen - is one of the few options for women during pregnancy to treat pain and elevated temperature, which can present significant medical dangers if ignored.

"In more than two decades of studies on the use of acetaminophen in gestation, zero credible investigations has definitively established that the usage of paracetamol in any trimester of pregnancy leads to neurodevelopmental disorders in young ones," the association stated.

This legal action references recent announcements from the Trump administration in asserting the medication is potentially dangerous.

In recent weeks, Trump generated worry from public health officials when he instructed pregnant women to "struggle intensely" not to use Tylenol when unwell.

Federal regulators then published an announcement that physicians should think about restricting the use of Tylenol, while also declaring that "a proven link" between the drug and autism spectrum disorder in minors has not been established.

The Health Department head Robert F Kennedy Jr, who manages the FDA, had promised in April to conduct "a massive testing and research effort" that would establish the cause of autism spectrum disorder in a matter of months.

But experts advised that identifying a single cause of autism - considered by experts to be the consequence of a complicated interplay of inherited and external influences - would be difficult.

Autism spectrum disorder is a form of enduring cognitive variation and disability that impacts how people experience and interact with the environment, and is identified using medical professional evaluations.

In his court filing, Paxton - who supports Trump who is running for US Senate - alleges Kenvue and J&J "willfully ignored and attempted to silence the science" around acetaminophen and autism spectrum disorder.

The case attempts to require the firms "remove any promotional materials" that states acetaminophen is secure for women during pregnancy.

The Texas lawsuit echoes the concerns of a collection of guardians of minors with autism and ADHD who took legal action against the makers of Tylenol in two years ago.

Judicial authorities dismissed the case, declaring investigations from the family's specialists was lacking definitive proof.
