Youth Found Dead Following False Allegations of Taking Cremated Remains
A teenage boy was discovered deceased only a few days after being wrongly accused of stealing the ashes of a dead infant during a break-in, an inquest has heard.
Tragic Discovery
Kai Lloyd's mother and father discovered his remains in his bedroom at his Flintshire home on 19 November 2021.
False Allegations Start
The inquest learned how his parent got a message on 8 November 2021 via social media, from a woman asking if her son was her offspring. The message stated: "Inform him appreciation for breaking into my flat."
In a statement read to the proceedings, Lisa Lloyd said the individual had been in the news, claiming her baby's remains had been taken in a burglary - a claim which was false.
Law Enforcement Investigation
An official inquiry from police later determined the alleged break-in victim had "provided false information" and "it now appears that said items was not taken in the beginning".
News coverage about the alleged taken ashes attracted social media comments, and although the teenager was not named in the posts, his parent said people "knew it was him".
The "online posts were really upsetting", she stated.
Mental Health Effect
She explained that her son had been identified with moderate ADHD, and as part of that condition, other peoples' opinions really mattered to him.
"This must have affected him severely," she commented, "especially when this was not true".
The teenager was detained at home, but no evidence was discovered. He was transported to a police station and later released under investigation.
Authorities said they would be in contact, the hearing learned, but had not contacted the family by the moment of his death.
Isolation and Worry
His parent said her son "became isolated" after the detention and "repeatedly inquired me whether I had received anything from the police", because his ADHD meant sometimes "a minute could feel like much longer".
When she spoke to him about the alleged incident, she said her son informed her he had gone into the house because the woman who resided there had said he could use the bathroom whenever he needed, but refuted taking anything.
Digital Harassment
In a joint statement between her and her husband, the mother said her son was being bullied online after the allegations.
The proceedings learned that one young adult encouraged Kai to end his life.
She had no worries on the evening before he passed away, describing how she had listened to him "chuckling and joking".
She portrayed him as a "caring, loving" boy, and said her "relatives is completely devastated".
He had been "clearly concealing his concerns", she said, noting that he could not bear to have anyone "have negative thoughts of him".
School Reaction
The inquest heard from school staff at Connah's Quay secondary school.
On 8 November, she "overheard some boys talking that Kai had been detained and that was the first I learned".
"He informed me... he'd done nothing wrong," she added.
After the discussion, the staff member said she rang Kai's family telephone and provided a voicemail saying she had communicated to Kai about the allegations.
The proceedings heard his family said they never receive that message.
Official Finding
Lead investigator told the hearing he would wait for documents regarding what improvements had been made to handling individuals with ADHD, before deciding whether he should make a avoidance of future deaths report.
Providing a descriptive finding, he said: "Approximately November 8th, 2021, unsubstantiated allegations were made against the teenager, a 14-year-old individual.
"Probably falsehoods were afterwards embellished and amplified through the medium of social media.
"During 11 November, he was interviewed by the police and after his questioning he was freed while investigations continued."
The coroner determined: "There is no proof that the acts or failures of any agency led to or contributed to his death and although it was the outcome of a personal act it is impossible to determine his intent."
